The
first estimates for the 2006-2007 soybean crop were released on
May 11th by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These projections
are preliminary and subject to change due to weather, disease and
other stresses during the growing season, the values provide some
indication of soybean and soybean meal production and use values
for the coming season.
While the USDA estimates for planted acres have been anticipated,
the estimated yield for the 2007 crop seems conservative which will
have a direct impact on total production of soybeans. The estimates
for the soybean crush and meal production/use are interesting and
reflect using year-end soybean stocks to make up for the anticipated
smaller soybean crop. Based on the anticipated supply of soybean
meal, USDA is projecting the price of soybean meal in the 2007/08
crop year to be in the range of $185-215 per short ton compared
to an estimated price of $195 for 2006/07.

Grains-Phosphorus Management
Fermenting the starch in corn to produce ethanol concentrates the
phosphorus in distillers grains by about three-fold. Phosphorus
levels in corn range from 0.27-0.33% compared to levels of 0.8-1.0%
in distillers grains. A paper from Iowa State University reviewed
a concern that feeding DGS may result in overfeeding phosphorus
and the higher levels of phosphorus in the manure could cause environmental
problems. The author pointed out that the potential problem would
vary with the species and diet being fed. He concluded that the
potential environmental problem could be minimized with an effective
manure management plan. Trenkle, Allen. 2006. With
increasing availability of distillers grains will phosphorus be
a problem for Iowa livestock producers? Iowa State University Animal
Industry Report A.S. Leaflet R2124.
