Soybean Meal for Atlantic Salmon

Australian researchers replaced fish meal with soybean meal in extruded feeds for Atlantic salmon. Salmon weighing 47 grams were fed extruded feeds for 63 days with 25 percent or 33 percent of the fish meal replaced with soybean meal. These diets were compared to a nutritional balanced control diet or an extruded commercial salmon feed. No significant differences in weight gain or feed conversion were seen between the control and diets containing soybean meal. The researchers concluded that the results of the experiments support the use of processed plant meals as important replace-ment protein sources for fish mea in extruded feeds for Atlantic salmon.
