Amino Acid Availability Comparisons

Using a growing pig assay, ileal nitrogen and amino acid digestibilities were determined for four commercial samples of rapeseed meal, four soybean meals and nine soybean meals. True ileal digestion of the amino acids was calculated by correcting apparent ileal digestibilities for basal endogenous amino acid losses measured in pigs fed a protein-free diet. The true ileal digestibility values were found as follows:

Rapeseed Meal Sunflower Meal Soybean Meal
Lysine 70.7% 80.% 90.5%
Threonine 73.2 81.8 86.8
Methionine 86.0 91.9 93.0

The true ileal digestibility values were reduced with increases in the relative levels of dietary acid detergent fiber levels to amino acid concentrations in soybean meal. Note: This study supports other studies showing the high relative quality of soybean meal.
