Effects of phytase on bioavailability of phosphorus in soybean meal-based diets for Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus.

Japanese research studied the effects of pretreatment or dietary phytase supplement for improving the phosphorus utilization of soybean meal or soy protein concentrated in diets of Japanese flounder. Results indicated that higher absorption of phosphorus occurred in fish fed the phytase pretreatment or supplemented diet as compared to the fish fed the basal diet. Whole body phosphorus retention and plasma phosphorus concentrations of fish fed the phytase treatments were significantly higher than fish fed the unsupplemented diet. These studies show that phytase supplementation of soybean meal and/or soy protein concentrates
