Comparison of Soybean Products

The digestibility of amino acids in dry extruded-expelled soybean meal (EESBM) and solvent-extracted soybean meal (SBM) was determined in pigs and poultry in research at the University of Manitoba. In the pig studies, cannulated pigs were fed semi-purified diets containing either five percent casein, or 35 percent SBM, or 35 percent of EESBM. Two different batches of EESBM were obtained and fed in the 4x4 Latin square designed study. Results indicated that the SBM had significantly greater (P<0.05) apparent ileal digestibilities of dry matter compared to the two EESBM sources. The apparent and true ileal digestibility of amino acids in SBM was greater (P<0.05) than one of the EESBM protein sources. Using adult cecectomized rooters, the research group reported that the SBM had greater (P<0.05) true digestibility for isoleucine, leucine, cysteine, proline, serine and tyrosine compared to one EESBM source. The researchers concluded that the amino acid digestibility of different batches of EESBM is more variable compared to commercial soybean meal sources in pigs and poultry digestibility trials.
