Soybean Meal Digestibilities-Pacific White Shrimp

Researchers at the Texas A&M Universities reported digestibility values for several common feed ingredients. The feed ingredients were substituted for thirty percent of the reference diet. Results of the soybean protein ingredients evaluated in the study were as follows:

  Protein
Content (*)

Apparent
Dry Matter
Digestibility (**)

Apparent
Amino Acid
Digestibility (**)
Soybean meal (48% Solvent Extracted) 51.6±0.1 78.2±1.8 97.1±0.6
Soybean meal (Full fat) 42.5±0.3 64.3±2.4 85.8±4.3
Soybean Meal (90% Isolated Protein) 89.6±0.3 80.0±1.8 98.4±0.9
(*) Expressed on dry weight basis; two replicates
(**) Expressed as a percent of total; average of three tanks

Compositional data are being developed that will allow the aquaculture industry to develop lower-cost shrimp feed formulations using alternative protein sources.
